Nacht van de Europese Literatuur
Europese Literatuur nu!
What does literature do? It is a guide to its own time. It expresses things that cannot be expressed in any other way. It addresses fundamental existentialist questions. And each period of our history is different, so that for centuries literature has been asking different questions. Literature shows us a world without absolute truth. It is a world of ambiguity: : there are unanswered questions, multiple voices, and truths that contradict one another. In today’s literature such questions as ‘Where do we come from?’ and ‘Where are we going?’ are increasingly being heard, not least within Eur ope. Those are the urgent questions I will discuss tonight with our 8 guests: where do we come from and where are we going? What are the different layers, what are the different languages and what various tonalities do we hear? In literature you are not only yourself but also the other - who the other is can be found in literature.
For tonight I have arranged a programme around various themes, which I will discuss with the authors. But in each conversation, these questions will be asked: what makes literature urgent to them? Where do we come from and where are we going?

Wat zijn de thema’s van romans en poëzie die vandaag de dag in Europa worden geschreven? Wat hebben romans vanuit verschillende delen van ons continent met elkaar gemeen? Wat vertellen zij ons over onze tijd en wat kunnen wij van hen leren? Dit zijn de centrale vragen die zullen worden gesteld tijdens de Nacht van de Europese literatuur. Tien auteurs, vanuit alle hoeken van Europa, zullen verschillende thema’s bediscussiëren met Margot Dijkgraaf. Tussen de gesprekken door is er een muzikale reis door Europa, verzorgd door Tjerk Ridder en Matthijs Spek, die verhalen, foto’s en songs over hun project Trekhaak Gezocht! zullen presenteren.

What are the themes of novels and poems which are written in Europe today? What do novels from different parts of our continent have in common? What do they tell us about our times, and what can we learn from these novels? These are the key questions to be raised at the European Literature Night. Ten authors from all over Europe will discuss a variety of themes in conversation with Margot Dijkgraaf. In the intervals between these conversations, there will be a musical trip across Europe by Tjerk Ridder and Matthijs Spek, who will present stories, photographs and songs about their project Trekhaak Gezocht!

Op welke manier resoneren gewelddadige gebeurtenissen die tijdens de kindertijd hebben plaatsgevonden in literaire werken? Enkele terugkerende elementen in Burnside’s poëzie, fictie en memoires zijn donkere schaduwen, jeugdtrauma’s en de aanwezigheid alom van de dood in het leven. In zijn tweede roman, The white king, bouwt Dragomán aan een wreed en beangstigend portret in het dictatoriale Roemenië onder Ceausescu.

Tegen de achtergrond van de 'grote' geschiedenis worden onze levens bepaald door keuzes in liefde en werk. Veel blijft verborgen - in familiegeschiedenis en in het leven van ieder individu. De ware drijfveren van mensen komen zelden aan de oppervlakte. Hoe weerspiegelt literatuur de geheimen die mensen koesteren? Heeft literatuur juist mysterie nodig? Wat betekent dat voor de compositie van een roman? Deze twee auteurs gaan daar, ieder op hun eigen manier, mee om: het leidt tot verhalen over schuld en vergeving, over de jacht op geluk en de mens als speelbal van de geschiedenis.
Secrets: discovering unbearable truths

Our lives are not only shaped by major historical developments, but also by the personal and professional choices we make. Many things remain hidden – in family histories as well as in the lives of individual people. The true motives of people rarely come to the fore. How does literature reflect the personal secrets of people? To what extent does literature need mystery? What are the implications on the composition of a novel? These two authors all deal with this in their own way. This leads to stories about guilt and forgiveness, about the pursuit of happiness, and about human beings as pawns of history.

Liefde en huwelijk, waarheid en leugens

Veel personages van deze twee schrijfsters, vaak vrouwen, zijn eigenzinnig, tegendraads - en buitenstaander. Hoe staat het ervoor met het huwelijk, aan het begin van de 21e eeuw? Waaraan ontleent de vrouw van nu haar identiteit en welke rol speelt de verbeelding daarbij? Wat is de nieuwe mannenrol? Wat betekent het om, zoals beide schrijfsters doen, 'tussen twee landen' te schrijven? In hoeverre kijken deze auteurs 'over de grens' en welke blik werpen ze op hun geboorteland? Hoe kijken ze aan tegen het Europa van nu?
Love and marriage, truth and lies

A lot of characters of these two writers, frequently women, are headstrong, defiant – and outsiders. What is the state of marriage at the beginning of the 21st century? How do contemporary women construct their identities, and what is the role of imagination in this process? What is the new role of men? What does it mean to write 'between two countries', as is the case with these two writers? To what extent do they look ‘beyond the border? How do they perceive their home countries as well as contemporary Europe nowadays?
